What is plagiarism?

At the University of Guelph, plagiarism is defined as “misrepresenting the ideas, expression of ideas, or work of others as one's own.”

Examples of plagiarism include:

• Copying or purchasing an entire paper and submitting it as your own.
• Submitting a paper you have written for credit in more than one course.
• Copying phrases, sentences, ideas, or arguments from a source without giving credit to the author.
• Not paraphrasing the original source thoroughly enough, even if you have cited it.

The bottom line: If you’ve used ideas or content that came from somewhere else, give credit where it’s due!
